MLB: Starter vs Starter Revenge
by MTi Sports

In this article we’ll examine a particular starter-based revenge situation. That is, when the pitcher is starting against the same starter and his team lost.

The one standout starter in this situation is Vicente Padilla, currently pitching for the Texas Rangers. His team is a perfect 8-0 since 2004 when he starts and they lost the last time they faced their opponent and the opponent had the same starter going. Padilla was 4-0 with the Phillies in this situation and is currently 4-0 with the Rangers. In this situation Padilla has been, on the average, a $1.24 underdog, but his team has won by an average score of 7.6 to 2.2 runs. Every win has been by multiple runs.

There are numerous teams against whom Padilla is currently seeking revenge. If the opponent sends out the same starter that beat him, he will be the right side to play.

Also performing well in this situation is Derek Lowe, currently starting for the Dodgers. His teams are a perfect 6-0 on the road with Lowe when he is seeking revenge for his team’s loss vs the same starter. Lowe was 1-0 with the Red Sox in 2004 and is currently 5-0 with the Dodgers.

Finally, the Mets are a perfect 5-0 with John Maine in this revenge situation, with the Mets allowing a total of 1.8 runs per game. NY has won three times as a dog, beating Chris Carpenter, Cole Hamels and Tim Hudson.

It is worth mentioning that a couple of the biggest money-burners in this situation are well-respected pitchers. Johan Santana’s team is 0-6 his last six in this situation, despite laying an average of $1.50.

The other is Carlos Zambrano, as the Cubs are 0-8 with Zambrano, when hosting a team and starter against whom Zambrano has revenge, despite laying an average of $1.58.

In baseball, it is not that uncommon for starters to be matched against each other the next time the teams face each other. Knowing the revenge motivation for each pitcher is another tool for the successful baseball handicapper.
