NBA/MLB Weekly Wrapup
by Lenny Del Genio

On Thursday night, the Celtics moved to 4-0 SU/ATS in Game 1’s with a 98-88 win and cover against the Lakers. It was an interesting result, evoking memories of Game 1 of the Conference Finals, as a seemingly written off Boston team proved the naysayers wrong. Of course, they are legitimite underdogs in here in the NBA Finals (Lakers opened at -165). Following the Game One result, the series odds have moved to -110 for each team.

The Lakers sure seem “due” for an Over in Game 2, don’t they? After Game One, that’s six straight Unders and counting with the last four all coming within 10 of the total.

Speaking of totals, several teams in Major League Baseball continue to be very streaky. The Florida Marlins are on a ridiculous 11-0-2 Over run, while their Friday opponent, the Cincinnati Reds, have gone Under in five straight. Sticking with the National League, the Houston Astros have gone Under in seven of eight entering Friday’s play. Milwaukee is red hot, having won nine of ten and they’ve also gone Under in eight of those games.

Over in the American League, the Indians were a big-time Under team throughout May, but have now gone Over in eight of ten. Tampa Bay and Texas start a weekend set on Friday with Rays having gone Under in seven of eight and the Rangers having gone Over in six straight.

Sometimes figuring out totals is as easy as looking at who the home plate Umpire is going to be. Bill Hohn certainly seems to be an ‘Under” guy. Entering Wednesday’s Cubs/Padres contest, games with Hohn behind the plate featured just 5.7 runs per game. Wednesday’s result was a 2-1 Padres win, of course. CB Bucknor is now 9-2 Under behind the plate following Wednesday’s 5-1 Yankees win by the Blue Jays.

Then, we have the case of Mike Reilly, a real “home cooking” type of umpire. Headed into Wednesday’s Houston at Pittsburgh game, home teams were outscoring road teams 5.5 to 2.8 with Reilly behind the plate and had won 9 of 13 games. Wouldn’t you know it? The Pirates beat the Astros 5-2.

Talk to you next week and good luck.
